At the University of Georgia, academic advising is required of all students prior to registration, and faculty mentoring, especially of upper-division students, is strongly encouraged. In order to encourage, acknowledge, and reward excellence in academic advising, the Office of the Vice President for Instruction developed an Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Award Program in 2000.

Each year, from 2000-01 through 2011-12, one award was given to a tenured/tenure-track faculty member and one award was given to a staff member or other non-tenure-track employee who served as an academic advisor. Beginning in 2012-13, an additional award was created for new advisors, or faculty or staff members who have been advising for less than three years. In 2018-19, two new awards were created: one to recognize an outstanding academic advising administrator, as well as an award to recognize excellence in advising special populations. Each winner receives an award plaque and is recognized at the Academic Advisor Summer Celebration. In addition, the winners of the New Advisor award, Professional Advisor award, and Academic Advising Administrator award receive a cash award and are nominated for the equivalent national award given by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Nominations

Nominations come from dean’s offices and the Exploratory Center, et. (i.e., academic units in which undergraduate students receive their official academic advising/mentoring).

Nomination Packet Information

In January 2020, Dr. Mike Merva (Franklin College) and Dr. Julia Butler-Mayes (OVPI) hosted a workshop to assist nominees and nominators as they constructed their Outstanding Academic Advisor Award nomination packets. The presentation from this workshop is available to view below. This resource clarifies common questions about the selection process, and provides guidance for creating an organized and compelling submission.

We suggest reviewing this information before you create your nomination packet and referring back to it as questions arise.
